URGENT: China executing 20 per day: PLEASE Call Congress
Dear Justice Seekers:
As I write Congress is debating a resolution to continue normal trade relations with China for another. This despite the following, quoted from the L.A. Times, July 7th 2001, page A1:
"At least 1,781 people were put to death in the last three months- more than were believed executed in China all last year, the human rights group Amnesty International reported Friday."
After calling 3 other Congressional offices, I called the office of the bill's author (Rohrbacher, astonishingly) and asked if they could site this quotation. The aide said "I sure wish we had had this before the debate started" and that nothing goes into the chamber after a debate starts. But there are many empty seats in there so I would think the citation could go in with a Member.
In any case, please get on the horn to your congressman. I made 4 calls and got 4 interested people, and it sounds like the debate could go either way. I can't help but think that if I did what I do in China, I would have been dead a long time ago. I don't know how waiting for all the human rights proponents to be executed is going to help human rights.
Thanks.
Ralph Cole
PS: The vote was just taken and the amendment to revoke normal relations failed. I'm sorry I didn't give you earlier notice. I would still let my Congressperson know where you stand, since other related votes will come up later. Also, Plan Colombia is being debated now. This needs to be defeated as well, because it will be used to oppress the poor there, as is taking place now.
